Starting Gate: Time Is Not On Her Side

(CBS)
After Hillary Clinton squeaked out must-wins in Ohio and Texas earlier this month, it appeared to provide some much-needed breathing room for a candidate on the ropes. Just two minor contests then remained before a six-week stretch of nothingness. There was plenty of time for Democratic voters in the remaining states, and those all-important superdelegates, to get over their Obama-mania and reconsider the risks of anointing the young upstart with the nomination.

For a time, it seemed that the "vetting" process the Clinton campaign had claimed was lacking for Barack Obama was beginning to kick in. The controversy surrounding Obama's former pastor and his ensuing speech on race began just the sort of party introspection Clinton's camp has long hinted would eventually sink his candidacy. Then came the sniper fire.

For a candidate pushing experience and "no surprises," the episode has been damaging to her entire rationale for getting those superdelegates to throw their weight behind her. Within two days time, the worm had turned and those clips of Rev. Jeremiah Wright shouting "God damn America" have been replaced with those of Clinton's arrival in Bosnia sans the bullets flying around her as she claimed.

Thus it wasn't much of a surprise when Clinton chose yesterday to weigh in for the first time on the Wright stuff. "He would not have been my pastor," Clinton said in response to a question asked during a meeting with the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review editorial board. Clinton repeated her comments about Wright in a news conference later in the day, making the point that one cannot choose their family members but can choose their pastors.

"It’s disappointing to see Hillary Clinton’s campaign sink to this low in a transparent effort to distract attention away from the story she made up about dodging sniper fire in Bosnia,” responded the Obama campaign to her comments. Clinton said she was responding to a direct question about Wright but she could certainly have chosen not to do so.

Every day spent talking about Rev. Wright, race or any other even slightly controversial subject involving Barack Obama is a good day for Clinton. Every day spent talking about her embellished wartime adventures is a very bad one. Every week spent split between the two only erodes her already long odds at winning the nomination. So far in this campaign lull, time has not been the ally Clinton once hoped it would.

One Hundred Years … Of Friendship? After spending a couple of weeks being hammered by Democrats for suggesting that the U.S. will remain in Iraq for 100 years if that's what it takes to win the war there under his leadership, John McCain will strike a more conciliatory note in a foreign policy address today in California.

"The United States cannot lead by virtue of its power alone," McCain will say according to prepared remarks released by his campaign. "If we lead by shouldering our international responsibilities and pointing the way to a better and safer future for humanity ... it will strengthen us to confront the transcendent challenge of our time: the threat of radical Islamic terrorism." McCain looks to avoid the go-it-alone approach for which the Bush administration has bee criticized for. "Our great power does not mean we can do whatever we want whenever we want, nor should we assume we have all the wisdom and knowledge necessary to succeed," he will say. "We need to listen to the views and respect the collective will of our democratic allies."

The NFL Bows To McCain Moment? The NFL is considering moving up its season-opening game in order to avoid a conflict with John McCain's acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention, according to one report. Because of the jockeying over convention scheduling, McCain will formally receive his party's nomination on September 4th, the same day the NFL kicks off its season with a now-traditional Thursday night game. Rather than the normal 8:30 eastern time for the start of the game the league is considering an earlier start so that the game would be over before McCain delivers his speech.

Around The Track

  • After already cancelling an appearance at a Tampa church this week, Rev. Jeremiah Wright has cancelled plans to speak at three services for a Houston-area church this weekend, citing security concerns.

  • Indiana student Evan Strange, who was rebuked by Chelsea Clinton yesterday after asking her a question about Monica Lewinsky, told the "Early Show" he is a Clinton supporter. "I was very surprised," Strange said about the response. "I can see where she'd get a little defensive because of the question and hearing Lewinsky over and over again, but I would like to hear her say something about Hillary rather than dismissing the question."

  • 1972 Democratic nominee George McGovern, a Clinton supporter, tells the AP he's not sure the country is ready to elect a women president. ""I have a feeling that in this country where we're at today in our thinking, it's going to be harder to elect a woman than to elect a black man. … I wish that weren't true ... I'd love to see Hillary as president."

  • In case you're wondering, the Democratic race looks to have officially lost one more candidate from the field. Mike Gravel is becoming a member of the Libertarian Party, according to the Top of The Ticket blog.

To equate exaggerating the facts a little bit with Obama supporting & befriending a racist and white supremacist for 20 years--is not even close. Unfortunately, the media will clutch at anything Clinton does to "expose" her--while they gloss over the serious inconsistencies of Obama (Law Professor Obama? Guess "lecturer" doesn''t sound as good?).

I would like to know when the msm is going to address of OBAMA''s involvement and support of RAILA ODINGA -the co-President of Kenya?
ODINGA was set up in the oil business by Muammar Quaddafi (no, I''m not kidding), was educated in Communist East Germany, named his first child "Fidel" (yeah, really) and when he and his followers disputed the election they torched a church with 100 christian woman & children inside--burning them alive. Odinga''s followers continued to engage in "clear ethnic cleansing" according to US Envoy Jendayi Frazer. Perhaps most troubling is Odinga''s links to Islamic extremists. On 8/29/07 Odinga signed a secret agreement (exposed 11/27) with Sheikh Abdullah Abdi in which he agreed to institute Islamic law in exchange for Abdi''s support--thereby potentially enslaving millions of Kenyan women.
OBAMA campaigned for ODINGA ("your agent for change"-sound familiar) in August 2006--to such a degree that the Opposition called him Odinga''s "stooge"

WONDER WHAT THE REPUBLICANS WILL MAKE OUT OF THAT?
SURELY THAT"s BETTER THAN NOT WEARING A LAPEL PIN?
    YA THINK?

"Hillary made a mistake in erroneously remembering a visit to Bosnia so many years ago."
I find it so interesting how Hillary''s outright lies turn into "just a mistake!" Boy, if I made mistakes like that a lot of people could end up in real trouble! And then, all I would have to do is say that I had "misspoken" and it would be all better. Oh ***, my job doesn''t work that way! I am expected to know what I am saying and you would certainly hope that I was competent to help in a crisis - in a domestic violence incident (especially when weapons are involved), severe medical problem, or a fire - where you needed help over the 911 line. I have a feeling that my bosses and the liability people would not just take my word for being sleep deprived or that I misspoke - if I gave the wrong information.

Obama makes a racist or arrogant remark and somehow it is Hillary''s fault.

Big difference between inviting someone to the White House for an evening - and sitting in his church for 20 years.

Why didn''t Obama move his family to another church? There is no justifiable answer - unless he has incredibly bad judgment; or that type of hatred resonates with Obama.

with his unity rhetoric you would think Obama would be leading the charge to include the Florida voters. His spiel about being inclusive only counts when those being included are his supporters.

Hillary made a mistake in erroneously remembering a visit to Bosnia so many years ago.

How does that mistake compare to Obama sitting in a church with his wife and his young daughters, for so many many years exposing them and himself to such racist, anti-American, anti-gay, anti-white hatred?

The Bosnia mistake should not be distracting us from asking Why Obama????

And yet some in the media gloat that "Obama seems to have weathered the storm" like he overcame some personal hardship that was out of his control.

The man surrounds himself with racist and extremist people like Wright and Farrakan - and the media seems glad he "weathered the storm?"

This is not a game people - this is not a man making personal decisions - this is a man aspiring to be president of the US.

Am I missing something here? Shouldn''t a presidential candidate speak on a major news issue?

What was HRC''s offense--speaking on an issue or speaking out against racism? Last I knew, neither was an offense in this country...but then again we have been BUSHwacked for 8 years...

The skillful manipulation of the caucuses by the Obama campaign certainly set up the present stalemate situation between the two campaigns. Had the Clinton Campaign interpreted the Obama campaign formulation earlier perhaps this race would not be so close. Another player causing this close race is the media. They unfairly hyped the Obama spectacle herding his lemming followers toward the cliff of irrelevance.
Indeed this has been an interesting exercise in race manipulation and I hope this has been a lesson to the uninformed and complacent.

I suggest time has run out for both candidates based on the division issue polling already done since the 22nd of March. It may very well be a slam dunk for the zerox copy of Bush.
This is pure speculation, but the creation of Hillary vs Obama is perfect for dividing the democratic electorate. Have Democrats fallen on their own sword?

I told my husband exactly that; we cannot choose our family but we can choose our friends and pastor. Apparently, Obama made the wrong choice when choosing his pastor and his friend Tony Rezco. A "bonehead moment" or a BAD JUDGEMENT?

You were not correct in saying that. Hillary could have left her impeached, lying husband. So she had choices--she chose loyalty--despite over 50% of Americans reviling him and what he did and said. Ironic is it not, that what you can ignore in what Hillary did (stand by a man who humiliated her and angered the country) is the very same trait you choose to condemn Obama for? LOL Look in that mirror---girl. LMAO

Hillary didn''t bring up the topic of Reverend Wright...she was responding to a pointed question posed to her by a reporter. I fail to understand how that causes her to be deemed as "sinking to new lows" to divert attention from herself. Reverend Wright wouldn''t be my minister either and if anyone asks, I would tell them that. I don''t think that makes me a bad person, nor does it diminish Mrs. Clinton''s campaign in any way. The Obama is very quick to dismiss his personal associations when they are inconvenient or out of step with his speeches or espoused ideology and they are the same ones who jump on McCain''s and Clinton''s associates. Obama doesn''t represent any kind of new politics at all. He and his associates are the same old same old types of politicians. He is a pretender.

ONCE AGAIN....Obama may find himself in hot water--not for something he did, but for who he knows. Those Rezko indictments are sure to heat up and spill over and cause damage!!

Unfortunately for Hillary--she can''''''''t catch a break, soon to potentially break in the news is the story before the California appeals court which could DeLay her candidacy for good. this time evidence shows that Hillary (HERSELF ONCE AGAIN)was involved. At issue is a 250K donation made to her senatorial campaign. Her staff said she had no knowledge of it, so she was not roped into the scandal when her campaign mgr faced charges of hiding that money from the IRS.

Unfortunately VIDEO may again place Hill in deep doo, doo. It seems there is a video tape recording her discussing the fund raiser with the donors (on it, she talks about who would be there and what they will do) this means she performed what is known as a direct campaign request. donations from donors for that kind of request are limited to 25K. Since the donation was for 250K, that would be considered campaign fraud.

Woe is Hillary and Damnnnn those videos and tape recordings that make being a great liar so hard to keep up these days!!! ROTFLMAO.

Maybe Hill should quit, before she finds herself in court this time, with no way to hide her hand in shady dealings. Here''''''''s the Link: http://www.usjf.net/modules.php?op=modlo

Hillary answered the quesion a reporter at the Tribune Review asked her regarding Obama''s pastor; I fail to see the reason that this is considered wrong.

As far as Bosnia is concerned, Hillary WAS IN Bosnia, in a war zone. I also do not understand why the press is so eager to report on the fact that she was not being fired upon but so reluctant to acknowledge that she has the right to say that Obama''s choice of a pastor would not have been her own.

I guarantee you if Hillary had belonged to a church for twenty years where the pastor was saying the same things that Obama''s pastor has said, the press would be more than happy to print any comments Obama would have on this subject, over and over again.

Once the delegates from Michigan and Florida are seated like they were voted upon, 55% for Hillary in Michigan and 50% for Hillary in Florida, then the race becomes a virtual tie. 1.7 million voters are being denied their say in which candidate should be the nominee. Obama doesn''t like this plan because he didn''t do well in either state. In Michigan, Senator Edwards and Obama told their supporters to vote "Uncommitted". Those only accounted for 40% of the vote. Split that between Edwards and Obama (20% a piece). If the tables were turned, no doubt Obama would be requesting this be made so. The DNC and the Obama people need to stop disregarding our vote. If they don''t, they better not come calling in November because I''ll be too busy to listen then!!

The Clinton''s has a fraud case in process--This is one more thing they are hiding.

Below is the case number of the actual case against Bill and Hillary Clinton for campaign finance fraud. The mainstream media has been blocking this information from all of their blogs and forums. Also, they refuse to print any information about this case. The Clintons and company are being brought up on charges of fraudulently taking money from Peter F. Paul. They bilk this guy out of nearly 2.0 million dollars total, but he pursuing restitution for 1.2 million dollars. This is very real. I have provided a link to the case so that you can see it for yourself. Please pass this on to everyone you know. I hope that this email gets to the people in Pennsylvania before their primary election. Notice that the case is scheduled for hearing THREE days after the Pennsylvania primary. This is what the Clintons don%u2019t want us to know. Hillary Clinton is really trying to dope us into thinking that she is honest and she really cares about Americans.

I used to be a HUGE Hillary supporter, but truthfully, The CBS, looping of her Lying about Bosnia, has more of an effect on me than Obama being associated with a racist pastor. I believe and thanks CBS for uncovering the Truth about the sniping of gunfire in Bosnia. I now, as a Democrat, who wants a Democrat in the White House, has to throw my weight behind our front runner, Barack Obama. Sorry, Hillary.

Polls this evening for the candidates show that favorable rating for Obama is at 45% now, dropped from 47% from a week ago and 60% from January.

Favorable ratings for Hillary now are 37% dropped from 47% a week ago and down from about 55% in January

This is from polls on Abc and Nbc tonight with a gallup poll echoing this. Obama''''s electability is at 60% right now (I believe according to the gallup poll) McCains is at 58% and Hillary''''s is at lower than 58% (can''''t remember the #) The consensus is the Wright flap hurt Obama a lot less than Hillary''''s lies hurt herself and McCain has only gained.

In other news, 28% of Hillary supporters threaten to support McCain if Hillary is not the nom. (she probably won''''t be) and 19% of Obama supporters are making the same kind of revenge threat voting. Guess we know which side has more sore losers. Ah well. From the Independent perspective, Hillary''''s campaign is being viewed by more as more negative and ugly than Obama''''s and according to NBC, 6 superdelegates have indicated they will probably move to Obama''''s circle, because the Wright thing today with Hillary is the last straw.....and her supporters thought it was all in good fun....

I simply cannot understand why anyone in his right mind would think that Senator Clinton should have chosen not to answer the question put to her about the Reverend Wright. She only answered truthfully when asked and had up until then refrained from speaking about Wright at all publicly. Does anyone think that if Senator Clinton had been attending a church for 20 years whose Pastor chose to make hatefilled remarks about Blacks or any other ethnic group, she would not have been lambasted by Obama''s supporters (of whom there seem to be many in the Press)? Everything she says is harshly criticized and frequently judged racial, but no one is supposed to mention Wright and Obama in the same breath.

I still have high hopes for Hillary. The MSM has been ruthless. They jump on her for anything...it takes a truckload (i.e. J. Wright) to get their attention about BO. Look, Hillary simply gave her opinion. And why should she not? This Wright thing is a big wrong thing...and I think any thinking and feeling American knows it...
